Win 7 and Server 2008 slow FTP performance
When we run an FTP with a win7 machine and a win2008 server the command line throughput is limited to ~15mbs. But an FTP run with an WinXP client machine with the same server on the same network yields a significantly higher speed. The same win7 machine with a linux/Ubunt/win2003 server yields the same high speed. Several changes to the autotuninglevel and rss settings on the server or client yield no performance improvement. Is there is a major disconnect with Win7 and Server08? Are there any changes to be made to Win7 or Server08 setups? Both client and server have the latest updates and upgrades! Thanks in advance!

I have tried several permutations and combinations of these tuneable parameters. The TCP Window does not exceed 64K (65535) when connecting to a Windows Server 2008 - but the same Win7 machine is fine connecting to Linux yielding high performance. A winXP machine is fine with the same Win08 Server. Thanks!

One thing I have noticed is that making changes to the server's default settings destroys the server for ever. The only way to recover from this issue is to format the server. No resetting of the tcp stack or registry entries helps at all. Hence for now - playing with the TCP auto-tuning settings is not advisable.

Once we make a change to improve the TCP settings - away from default settings - we cannot restore the server performance back to what it was before we made changes. The throughput received by test applications drops dramatically. The only way to recover the OS to its original state is to re-install the entire OS. We have tried to reset the TCP settings and use multiple netsh commands - but have had no luck restoring the server to its initial state of performance. Infact after making the changes - to the tuning levels - the peformance actually degrades.

Windows 7 laptop - connected to a mobile device - connected to the LAN - connected to the test FTP server. The client laptop is one hop from the server. The same setup with a windows xp laptop yields a significantly higher number. The TCP Window does not open large enough to reach high thruput numbers. The round-trip time is 25 ms.

yes - I have tried that - but I never get a large enough window to open in this case. I have also tried a delay box in the middle - can't get the TCP Window to open - unlike in the Windows XP case - the tcp window will open to the advertised size.
