Win2012 DHCP not assigning router/DNS addresses
Hi I have configured DHCP on a Windows 2012 R2 server standard edition. It is the only server on a small network. A domain has been setup. Everything went fine during setup and dcpromo. Installation of DCHP was fine. There are no problems reported in the event logs. Server = 192.168.2.10 Router = 192.168.2.1 Scope = 192.168.2.50 - 192.168.2.99 I have configured the options for both the server and the scope so that the DNS server, router, domain name, node type etc are correct. The Windows firewall has exceptions for DHCP and DNS and are allowed for incoming and outgoing traffic. When a client connects and requests a DHCP address, an APIPA address is assigned instead. The clients do not have a firewall installed. ipconfig /all from the server: Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7601] Copyright (c) 2009 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. I've set this up several times on domains but cannot figure out why the clients are not able to contact the DHCP server. This is a problem because the company has guests who need to connect to the Internet. A wireless connection is available via the router, and DHCP has been disabled on the router. Any ideas, please? I'm sure it's a basic configuration issue but I can't work it out. Thanks!

Hi, Seems you have configured scope options correct.Anyways just follow below steps one after the other and check for the difference. Check whether you authorized your DHCP server to release IP addresses to clients?Check DHCP server service in running state or not ? Check whether you have any VLAN restrictions at your place?Ensure no problems with switch ports and/or wiring between the client and server. Are you able to communicate with the server if you configured manual IP address in client machine? If communicate there won't be a network issue. Have to check DHCP configuration settings once again. Finally do we have any error/warning events recorded for DNS/DHCP in both client and server also?Regards, Ravikumar P

Get a trace Run netmon / wireshark trace on DHCP server and on the client OS simultaneously. Examine the DHCP packets or you can paste the transcript of the packets ( DORA process packets ) The packet info will give you clear understanding of your setup .

Hi, Agree with Ravikumar, please make sure that the DHCP Server is authorized in your domain. More information: DHCP Server Authorization Best Practices Analyzer for Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol Hope this helps. Jeremy Wu TechNet Community Support

Thanks to everyone for their responses and apologies for the late reply. I have intermittent access to this server. First, the DHCP server is authorised. When I right-click the server name, Unauthorise is displayed. There are two errors logged on the domain controller hosting DHCP in the DHCP-Server log: ============================================= Log Name: Microsoft-Windows-Dhcp-Client/Admin Source: Microsoft-Windows-Dhcp-Client Date: 03/01/2013 10:08:11 Event ID: 1001 Task Category: Address Configuration State Event Level: Error Keywords: User: LOCAL SERVICE Computer: sl-PC Description: Your computer was not assigned an address from the network (by the DHCP Server) for the Network Card with network address 0x000E2E86589E. The DHCP Client and Server services are running on the domain controller. All services are set to automatic. VLANs are not used. When the IP details are manually assigned I can navigate the network and connect to the other computers/server without problems, and Internet access is fine. The router (the gateway) is brand new and the wired network has only just been installed. I have downloaded netmon and installed it and will run it. I'll post the results here, but having never used this before (nor any network traffic capture tool), I hope that someone here can help intepreting it. Thanks!
