Why we use WINS Server?
Hi, As I am aware, WINS server is used for translating from NetBIOS name to IP Address of host. Now I have one server 2008 and I need not run the WINS feature on my server but why on my client computer, I can ping ping the other computer by using hostname?

With the introduction of Windows Server, DNS name resolution is used over NetBIOS name resolution. The DNS Client service handles name resolution. It first submits all name resolution tasks to DNS. If DNS name resolution cannot occur, the DNS Client service submits the name to NetBIOS. The common methods used to resolve host names are listed below: NetBIOS name resolution: HOSTS file: DNS server: Host Name Resolution http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb727005.aspx well explained by Brent Huhttp://www.virmansec.com/blogs/skhairuddin

if you have nebios over tcpip enabled on your client from the tcp/ip properties you will be able to ping host names as i have already mentioned above. Active directory completely depends upon the dns infrastuture and DNS is an open standard which can be used on any platform for the name resolution where as Windows Internet Naming Service created by Microsoft . Apart from this the Windows Domain Clients uses the DNS to locate the Domain controllers Global catalogues using Srv Record which cannot be done by WINS. As an Example Exchange Server is completely meged with the active directory and dns without implementing dns you cannot implement exchange server as exchange server clients uses Global Calalogue Server to get the Global Address List from Active Directory. There are lot more things to be explained its just a start :) to make you understanding the the basics Hope you Understand http://www.virmansec.com/blogs/skhairuddin

Hi, Computer also know the other computer name without WINS or DNS by doing brocasting. If our network contain many computers it will waste the nework bandwith so we have to configure WINS server. Is it true?

yes you are right because when WINS server address is pointed on the clients they will directly reach the WINS server for the name resolutions instead sending a broadcast on the network.http://www.virmansec.com/blogs/skhairuddin
