Why is my server entering sleep mode during the day?
Hello, Our Server 2008 (32 bit) has been shutting down on Tuesday mornings several weeks in a row now. When I check the event logs I see Kernel-power event ID 42 "The system is entering sleep." It is preceded by Event 102, Resource-Publication "The service temporarily stopped publishing because of a power event." Then followed immediately by Event 4202, Tcpip "The system detected that network adapter Local Area Connection was disconnected from the network and its network configuration has been released. If the network adapter was not disconnected, this may indicate that it has malfunctioned. Try updating the network adapter's drivers." I have verified that sleep mode is disabled. Any ideas on what may be causing this? Thanks, Jared

Hi, Please check if there is a task schedule, a Group Policy or a script to put the Windows Server 2008 into sleep mode every Tuesday. If not, please perform a Clean Boot to test the issue on Tuesday to determine if there is a third party software conflicts. For the detailed steps, please refer to the following Microsoft KB article: How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135 Regards, Arthur Li TechNet Subscriber Support in forum If you have any feedback on our support, please contact tngfb@microsoft.com . Thank you for the response Arthur. I would like to troubleshoot with the clean boot method you have listed, but this is a production server and I can't have it down for an extended period of time. Do I have any other options? Thank you, Jared

Thank you Darrell. I ran the powercfg /q on the server and my output is below. However, powercfg /engergy does not appear to be a recognized command. Hi, Based on the current situation, would you please try to disable Sleep and Hibernation modes to test the issue? To disable Sleep mode, navigate to “Control Panel\Hardware\Power Options\Change when the computer sleeps” and select “Never” for “Put the computer to sleep” box. For how to disable Hibernation, please refer to the following Microsoft KB article: How to disable and re-enable hibernation on a computer that is running Windows http://support.microsoft.com/kb/920730 Regards, Arthur Li TechNet Subscriber Support in forum If you have any feedback on our support, please contact tngfb@microsoft.com . OK. I have performed the steps above, albeit a modified version of disabling sleep mode (this is a Windows Server 2008, that path and options don't exist). We'll see what happens next Tuesday. Keep your fingers crossed! Thanks! Jared

I dont' see anything in the report above which should be the current power settings from the power scheme, the energy option was new for Windows Server 2008 R2, didn't notice that this was Windows 2008( or Windows 7).
