Which server software to upgrade to??

I currently have a web server running Windows 2008 server (SP2), but I'm having several issues (listed in another post) with this computer. I've been thinking about upgrading my server hardware, and have decided to do that.

With the new server I'll be purchasing, I need to install a new OS on it. I'm planning on Windows 2012 - but am not sure which version. All this server will be doing is running IIS and SQL Server along with several asp.net web sites. I'm guessing that the "Essentials" version is all I'd need. Is there anything else I should consider?

Hi

 You can install IIS and SQL on Essentials,but the point is Essentials have to the root DC(Fsmo holder),and sql is not supported on DC.

 I recommned you install SQL and IIS on Windows Server 2012 r2 Standard edition.Also you can use more hardware specification on Standard edition.(Specially ram),

ALso check this Windows Server 2012 R2 Products and Editions Comprasion;

Thanks, Burak.

There is no DC on the network right now, and I wouldn't be making this server a DC. All I really need is IIS, SQL Server and the ability to access the server thru Remote Desktop. I'll only be putting 16gb RAM in this box and only one processor, so I think the "essentials" version would be sufficient.

Thanks for the link - I took a look at that, but am not sure that I understand most of the parameters!

 and I wouldn't be making this server a DC.

For 2012 Essentials this is not possible without breaking it.

 I agree. Burak said that Essentials has to be the root DC and he meant just that. It must be a DC and must hold the FDMO roles. It was designed to allow a small business to enjoy the benefits of a domain environment (rather like the old SBS server). You need Server Standard to run IIS and SQL.
