Yes you can use "Workgroup" as your domain there should be no issues at all. Note: If your are connected on the network and you would like to connect another computer using the name of the other machine then you should have same workgroup name mentioned on the destination computer as well other wise you will not be able to access other computers over the network bearing different workgroup names.
