What does this actually mean and how do I fix it: Alert: Error Count Monitor Resolution state Object Hyper-V Virtual Storage Device Has a value

We are getting this alert on a fair few of our VMs with VHDXs and Dynamic VHDs. Everything seems OK but I am not sure what this actually means and what I need to do to resolve the issue. How do I reset the error count if that is what is required? Thanks in advance.

Hello Darren,

Please be notified that this forum is for System Center Operations Manager(SCOM) related issues. If I understand this issue correctly, this is a Hyper-V related issue. Please use the following Hyper-V forum, which could be a best resource in this scenario.

But I am getting this alert from SCOM and SCOM has no information about the alert for me to find out what to do - thought that was the point of SCOM to let you know of problems and how to resolve them. :)

The alert is coming from the Error Count Monitor that is part of the Hyper-V Management Pack Extensions (v 4.0.0.0)

I have tried looking in the Event Logs on the Host and there doesn't seem to be any storage related errors there. I am trying to establish if this is a false positive, why it is happening and if it is safe to override and ignore.

There is nothing on the Product Knowledge tab and nothing on the Alert Context other than what I have already mentioned (see below).

Thanks for responding.

Hello Darren,

Thanks for the clarification. Here is a KB article related with this error message:

Hyper-V Host Reports a Virtual Storage Device Error With Pass-through Disk
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2624495/en-us?sd=rss&spid=14134

Please check if it helps.

Thanks for the link. I had found this and discounted it because of the following:

1) Running Server 2012 on both the hosts and the VMs (except one that is a Windows 8 guest)

2) Not using pass-through disks

3) Getting it on disks that are on the IDE and SCSI controller across various guests. Only common link I can think of is that they are all using Server 2012 or Windows 8 and that the disks are stored on a couple of CSVs stored on an Equilogic SAN (which does have the latest available firmware).

Have I mis-assessed the article?

Thanks again.

I didn't fix it, it is still doing it. I'd love to know what is causing it.

I wish it was true but I have a RDS 2008 R2 server that has only 1 disk and as it is a generation 1 vm can't boot from scsi disk so only an ide controller attached to the VM.
