I am sure this has been asked, but I cant find the specifics for my situations.

I am running at Vm for server 2012R2 and installed the wsus role.

I have successfully moved all my servers and desktops from the old wsus server to this one. the version number is 6.3.9600.16384.

using group policy, my clients point to http://wsus:8530

the wsus server itself is not reporting in. I can not recall if it ever reported in to be honest.  what can you  suggest that I look at?

Check the %windir%\WindowsUpdate.log. Are there any relevant errors? if you check for * WSUS server: does the correct hostname appear for the new server? 

When you moved the clients from the older WSUS to the new, did you just update DNS, or use GPO to point to the new server? 

Referring to DNS, no, I used group policy only to make the change.

when you say check for * WSUS server, what does that mean. do you want me to check in the WindowsUpdate.log?

I have warnings in the log and I have a fatal: OnCallFailure failed with hr=0x8024401B

Can you confirm exactly where the WSUS server is pointed to as a client? In other words, if you run RSOP on that machine, what values does it have for the intranet update service and intranet statistics service?

I'm guessing there's something blocking the GPO being applied correctly to that machine.

to my knowledge, I don't think anything is different.

it is also my understanding that none of our servers use the proxy to connect to the internet. 

I ran updates on this wsus1 server by selecting "Check online for updates from Windows Update." that returned one update yesterday.  so I think it is getting out to the net fine. so far, so updates as available in the wsus console, but maybe nothing has been released by MS a this time. I also check on my surface that is not connected to the domain and it showed no new updates, so I think MS has just not released any so far.

Ok,  the reason it's trying to get to the web for those updates is explained here  essentially those URLs are for definition updates, which WSUS doesn't provide.

Can you try the below to reset the authorization and force a connection back: it should help pinpoint exact issues. 

1. Record the system time.

2. Reboot the system (or restart the Windows Update service).

3. After reboot run the command wuauclt /resetauthorization /detectnow.

4. Wait 30 minutes.

5. Post the entries from the WindowsUpdate.log starting at the time recorded in Step #1.

time is 3:38pm.

i wanted to post something interesting. Last night and into today, is my windows update schedule for my "First Roll out" group.  the wsus server is part of this group.  I checked for updates using check online. it found 10 updates. I installed them and rebooted.  after any box comes back online, I run a check for updates again.  on the wsus server, I selected check for updates.  it checked for updates against "Managed by your System Administrator" and found one update.  it was a security updates for IE 11 (KB3034196)  it was able to pull this from the wsus service I take it and not connecting to Microsoft. This leads me to believe that this is simply a check in issue and nothing more.  hopefully this will shed some light on my issue.
