WRT610N Loses Internet connection, does not respond - with HP Mediasmart HomeServer plugged in
I have a new Linksys WRT610N v2 (2.00.00.B05) Gigibit router with 3-6 computers (Vista, W7) attached wired and wireless to them at any point in time. I also have an HP Mediasmart EX470 (Windows Homeserver) attached to the network to back them all up. Everything worked great with a Linksys WRT54G - but I wanted Gigabit. Every morning (and some afternoons) since I got the router, I found it completely unresponsive - all lights on, all systems with IP addresses, etc. - but the router was not communicating with the Internet - and it would not connect newly booted computers, etc. To ensure it was not my cable modem I replaced it. I now have an Ambit uc1018.80. Rather than pushing the reset button on the router a few days ago and going through the reconfig process; I tried unplugging network cables to see if it would have an effect. I unplugged the homeserver - and my cable modem "send" light flashed - I was connected (I could browse, etc.) I plugged it back in - and everything went dead - no more send light on the cable modem - and no more internal network traffic either. Because I could not remote into the homeserver, I rebooted the homeserver - and everything worked - until the next night. The homeserver is a HP EX470 Mediasmart with a memory upgrade (2gb) and a processor upgrade (AMD 1640). It is running Windows Home Server Powerpack 3 (HP Update 1.2.1) with the following addons (PacketVideo PVConnect 4.4.4, Microsoft Homeserver Toolkit 1.1 (6.0.1800.0); and McAfee Total protection 5.0.0.648-patch003). I do not have remote access settings configured. The homeserver is configured to backup all computers on the network overnight - most of the time they have completed successfully. To try to solve the problem, I have set the router back to factory defaults multimple times (it is on the latest firmware) - and I have upgraded the SiS191 network driver on the home server to 2.06a - and changed out the homeserver network cable as well. Same problem - no Internet connection and router unresponsive after several hours with homeserver plugged in - the router works flawlessly with homeserver off the network.I suspect that the problem has somethig to do with DHCP - but because I have no access to the homeserver when this happens and no events of substance are in the event logs, I am flying somewhat blind.Any help or steps to troubleshoot are appreciated. Thanks,

Hello, Thank you for your post here. Yes, please paste the IPconfig /all output and explain more about the IP addresses schema in your network. Moreover, please answer the following questions that will help us narrow down the issue: 1. Do all clients/server behind the WRT610N lose the Internet access when the issue happens? 2. When the issue happen, how does the internal access works on those clients? 3. To isolate the issue from the router, you may check how everything works if you replace the router if possible. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to let us know.

1. All clients behind the router lose Internet access when the event takes place (I also notice that the "send" light on the cable modem stops blinking).2. All clients lose access to each other and the router as well.3. This worked fine with a WRT54G - but I need Gigabit. I understand that this is probably a router configuration issue - but it is also an interoperability issue with WHS.Here is the requested information - and the steps followed:1. Router set to factory defaults and re-configured.2. All systems rebooted and connected to router.3. All works well for several hours.4. Cable Modem send light goes out - all network access from client computers ceases.5. WHS cable disconnected from router - all client network traffic starts working and continue to work for several days without WHS connected.6. I don't mean to push - but the Technet subscription says "get answers to your technical questions within two days - guaranteed".Possible remediation efforts and risks - that I have read about include:1. Remove IPv6 from all computers (not an option - I telecomute with a computer that I cannot change).2. Add IPv6 to the WHS Server; but even though WHS is a W2K3 Server - I am finding links that say it is not supported.3. Check the DHCP boradcast flag on the WHS server to see if http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928233 is a problem for WHS as well.4. Set WHS to a static IP address. So #1 is not an option and #2-#4 have a high risk - in that, if the WHS server does not come up on the network, I will have to pay $75 for a head unit and tear the server apart to reconfigure it(there are no keybord, mouse or display connections outside the box). The again, I could be way off with all of these...Any recommendations? Thanks,

For trouble shooting I'd try #12.) I'll have a look at mine.3.) I wouldn't think this would apply to WHS4.) I don't understand what you're tearing apart. I routinely RDP into my WHSRegards, Dave Patrick .... Microsoft Certified Professional Microsoft MVP [Windows]

Re: #4 - if I lose network connectivity - there will be no RDP.Re #2 - I cannot find anything "official" on the Microsoft sites that says IPv6 is not supported on WHS - ony hearsay from other sites - have you seen anything out there? Let me know what yours looks like.Like I said - #1 is not an option - I have a computer with IPv6 on it that I cannot change the configuration of.Thanks,

If I RDP into WHS and choose to add a new network protocol then Microsoft TCP/IP version 6 is listed as a digitally signed option. I think you must consider #1 for trouble shooting. If not you're left largely in the dark about the specific problem. If you find that the problem is centered around WHS then you might have better luck asking in these groups.http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/category/WindowsHomeServer/Regards, Dave Patrick ....
