W2k3 server unstable after a couple of weeks - help
Hello,I have a Win2003 Enterprise server w/SP2 running in an HPBlade with an Intel Xeon CPU E5450 @ 3.0 Ghzand 16Gb Ram. This is a terminal server used for monitoring purposes basically. We run lots of scripts there that invokes at the begining of the script a command prompt to do some manual cleanup and after a week or 2 the server gets pretty unstable and I had to reboot it to gain stability back. I used windebug to try to troubleshoot the problem and this is what I found... *** Virtual Memory Usage ***Physical Memory: 4193707 ( 16774828 Kb)Page File: \??\C:\pagefile1\pagefile.sys Current: 4177920 Kb Free Space: 3844508 Kb Minimum: 4177920 Kb Maximum: 4194304 KbPage File: \??\C:\pagefile2\pagefile.sys Current: 4177920 Kb Free Space: 3836584 Kb Minimum: 4177920 Kb Maximum: 4194304 KbAvailable Pages: 3158955 ( 12635820 Kb)ResAvail Pages: 3754931 ( 15019724 Kb)Locked IO Pages: 229 ( 916 Kb)Free System PTEs: 122918 ( 491672 Kb)Free NP PTEs: 32766 ( 131064 Kb)Free Special NP: 0 ( 0 Kb)Modified Pages: 522 ( 2088 Kb)Modified PF Pages: 17 ( 68 Kb)NonPagedPool Usage: 23082 ( 92328 Kb)NonPagedPool Max: 65215 ( 260860 Kb)PagedPool 0 Usage: 31930 ( 127720 Kb)PagedPool 1 Usage: 4826 ( 19304 Kb)PagedPool 2 Usage: 4890 ( 19560 Kb)PagedPool 3 Usage: 4877 ( 19508 Kb)PagedPool 4 Usage: 4812 ( 19248 Kb)PagedPool Usage: 51335 ( 205340 Kb)PagedPool Maximum: 61440 ( 245760 Kb)Shared Commit: 125546 ( 502184 Kb)Special Pool: 0 ( 0 Kb)Shared Process: 262710 ( 1050840 Kb)PagedPool Commit: 51399 ( 205596 Kb)Driver Commit: 2885 ( 11540 Kb)Committed pages: 1371700 ( 5486800 Kb)Commit limit: 6218332 ( 24873328 Kb) Total Private: 837625 ( 3350500 Kb) 5cf8 java_agent.exe 17544 ( 70176 Kb) 0350 svchost.exe 11993 ( 47972 Kb) 107e4 Rtvscan.exe 11263 ( 45052 Kb) 22074 iexplore.exe 5594 ( 22376 Kb) 21bbc iexplore.exe 5566 ( 22264 Kb) 1500 hpaAgent.exe 5241 ( 20964 Kb) 23e88 iexplore.exe 4771 ( 19084 Kb) 1ab7c iexplore.exe 4723 ( 18892 Kb) 22ee4 wfica32.exe 4609 ( 18436 Kb) 01e8 lsass.exe 4298 ( 17192 Kb) 21820 wfica32.exe 3934 ( 15736 Kb) 23b94 wfica32.exe 3922 ( 15688 Kb) ........ 0394 cmd.exe 0 ( 0 Kb) 0388 cmd.exe 0 ( 0 Kb) 037c cmd.exe 0 ( 0 Kb) 0378 cmd.exe 0 ( 0 Kb) 033c cmd.exe 0 ( 0 Kb) 0310 cmd.exe 0 ( 0 Kb) 0308 cmd.exe 0 ( 0 Kb) 02e4 cmd.exe 0 ( 0 Kb) 02d4 cmd.exe 0 ( 0 Kb) 029c cmd.exe 0 ( 0 Kb) 0298 cmd.exe 0 ( 0 Kb) 0274 cmd.exe 0 ( 0 Kb) 026c cmd.exe 0 ( 0 Kb) 0258 cmd.exe 0 ( 0 Kb) 0238 cmd.exe 0 ( 0 Kb) 0230 cmd.exe 0 ( 0 Kb) 01cc cmd.exe 0 ( 0 Kb) 01c8 cmd.exe 0 ( 0 Kb) 01c0 cmd.exe 0 ( 0 Kb) 016c cmd.exe 0 ( 0 Kb) 0138 cmd.exe 0 ( 0 Kb) 0088 cmd.exe 0 ( 0 Kb)After 2 weeks of uninterrupted work, I get over 25.000 of this cmd.exe processes with 0 bytes. I could not see them using task manager or Process Explorer.Does anyone have any idea why this could be happening or how to identify and kill those processes?Thanks in advance,Federico.

Federico-Sounds like maybe one of your scripts is not closing the process handles after launching cmd.exe. Figure out the PIDs of the cmd.exe instances. If they're all or mostly the same then you've found your problem.Michael
