Volume Licence Key replacement on Server 2003 R2 SP1 x86_64bit as in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/91 8342
Hello, could anybody instruct me how to replace a valid volume licence with another? We need this since we have to return the current one, and apply the new key.Basically I need the steps outlined in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918342 which do not work on my x86_64bit installation of Microsoft Windows Server 2003 R2 SP1.The problem I see on x86_64 is: the applikation window of "%systemroot%\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a" disappears immediately after start. Before, I deleted the contents of the binary Registry Key described in subject knowledge base artice.I appreciate your help.Thanks.

Hello, 1. Make sure you are logged in with the local administrator account, not just an account with Administrator privileges. 2. Try replacing the %systemroot% variable with the actual drive letter that your actual directory path, especially when dual booting, or if the system path is on a drive other than C:\ On a normal Windows XP/2003 installation, your systemroot should be C:\windows\ so the command should be C:\Windows\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a 3. Make sure you include a space between .exe and /a in the command: Correct - C:\winnt\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a Incorrect - C:\winnt\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe/a More information: How to change the Windows XP Product Activation Key Code http://gur.in/change_windows_xp_code.htm Hope it helps. Hello Tim,I verified that I signed in using the local Administrator, and I replaced the %systemroot% variable with the complete path. The behaviour changed to now being able to display the window of msoobe.exe and the first screen of the assistant. Selecting "Yes, I want to telephone a customer service representative to activate Windows" is possible, but klicking "Next" the message "Generating new Installation ID ..." is displayed for some seconds, then the window just disappears.Btw. the link gur.in/... no longer works, see http://pages.prodigy.net/larzman/WinXP_Key_Code.htm.Do you know what else needs to be done? Thanks.

Hello, Thank you for the reply. Based on the current situation, I suggest contacting your local Microsoft Activation Center to activate your system manually. http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/resources/vol/numbers.mspx Hope it helps. Tim Quan - MSFT
