Virtual Fibre Channel Requirements

I have just installed server 2012 on a new server with QLogic 2560 Adaptors. have configured the Adaptor with a vport and it has been issued with a WWN as well.

I have also tried to check Hyper-V settings (virtual SAN manager), but it is telling me that the device or driver does not support virtual Fibre Channel.

I do understand that there will be changes that are required to be made on the Fibre Switch, NVP, however, the above error is just telling me that my Fibre card is not supported?

A few tips...

  1. Make sure you have the latest drivers for the Fibre Channel Adapter
  2. Make sure you have the latest firmware for the Fibre Channel Adapter
  3. Verify that you have enabled NPIV on the FC adapter.
  4. Verify that you have enabled NPIV on the FC switch port.

BTW, you may see an option for NPV as well on some FC switches. Hyper-V doesn't need or use NPV, just NPIV.

Thanks Jeff,

although i could create the virtual fiber interface on the card, i still could not get hyper-v to do it. so got the correct (updated) drivers for it and managed to solve the problem. everything is working as it should.

cheers

Hi Guys,

Mario,

my best bet would be to contact your HBA card manufactures and see if they have an updated drivers for your device. you may also want to check if the card does support NPV.

my suggestion is to get hyper-v to create new Fiber Channel SAN on VSAN Manager to ensure that your drivers and devices are working as expected before moving onto NPV on the switches.

hope it helps.

Hi Ashneel,

i solved the dilemma!!! The HBA Emulex needs the software manager to enable the NPIV protocol. The new software is "One Command Manager", in the past is called "HBAEnywhere". I downloaded and installed it, when i start the program there are the setting about the HBA card, in the section features i've seen that NPIV protocol was disabled. Enabled it and.....voil! :-)

With Flex Frabric the NPIV protocol must be enabled on the FC switch but this was not enough.

P.S.: for QLOGIC card install the "SAN Surfer"

thanks a lot....bye

Remove all manually created NPIV-ports from adapters via QLogic Console. Install latest QLogic FC driver version 9.1.11.20 or 9.1.11.24. Then create two new FibreChannel SAN in Hyper-V Manager.

The best way would be to expose FC LUN to a Hyper-V cluster, create CSV on top of it and use shared VHDX (with a R2 upgrade of course) and getting rid of a virtual FC completely. MUCH faster to run (virtual FC is basically a pass thru and shared VHDX use CSV cache) and ages easier to config. What's use in a virtual FC except guest VM cluster (solved by shared VHDX more effectively) either way? My $0.02...
