VPN created with connector software is set to public. How to change to private on Windows 10 home

How do you change a VPN connection in WINDOWS 10 to private.

Windows 8 home desktop upgraded to 10 home.

Used Windows10.0-KB2790621-x64 (pre-release or beta connector for 10 and 2012r2 essentials) to connect to the offsite 2012 essentials server. The connector software installed the VPN and the launchpad. Connecting with the VPN works. I can open the launchpad and see shared folders, dashboard, and RWA.

The problem is that I cannot ping netbios name of the essentials server or any other pc through the VPN. In the network and Sharing Center the VPN is listed as public. I am 99% sure I need this set to private since it can't be d

Hi,

According to your description, my understanding is that you want to change the network location type of VPN connection from public to private on Windows 10.

You may try to edit the network location type with registry key:
1. Locate the registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\NetworkList\Profiles
2. Click sub key of Profiles, check the PofileName in the right pane, and try to find one which displays current network name.
3. When you find the correct PofileName, double click Category in the same right pane and change the value data to 1.
4. Reboot your computer.

Remember to back up registry key on your device before any change. You may try to restore from the backup if there is anything wrong after changing.
