VPN Error 806
I have been trying to get VPN to work for a while but keep getting the 806 error. I have setup routing and remote access on Server 2008. I'm trying to use PPTP. I have enabled PPTP and GRE on firewalls on both the server and client. What I think might be the problem is my router. It is a Netgear WGR614v10. I have read that the SPI firewall needs to be disabled. But I do not see this firewall in the settings. What I see is a Disable Port Scan and DoS Protection option. But when I disable this it still doesn't work. But I'm not even sure if this is the problem. I feel like I have exhausted all my options. But I'm sure there is something I'm missing. Thanks in advance!

Hi, Thank you for the post. Agree with Jonathan, please set port forwarding (47,1723) to your VPN server. Here is thread replied by NETGEAR Support. http://forum1.netgear.com/showthread.php?p=69742 RegardsRick Tan TechNet Community Support

Hey guys. I appreciate all the response but none of the suggestions worked. I've already tried most of it. But the long response on the netgear support didn't work either. If you can think of anything else let me know.

Hi, Please test to connect VPN server in LAN: Use internal client VPN to VPN server internal IP address. It could verify if the problem is on your VPN server or Netgear router. RegardsRick Tan TechNet Community Support

I can't connect that way either. I get the same 806 error.

Hi, So the issue is on your VPN server or internal switch/router. Try to close the firewall on your VPN server and test the PPTP port via portqry or PPTP ping. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb877965.aspx RegardsRick Tan TechNet Community Support

Ok. I'm not sure if I did this right, but I turned off the firewall and I ran pptpsrv on the server and then tried to connect through VPN. It showed that it received 4 packets. But it did not connect successfully. Same 806 error.

Hi, Please try to close your server antivirus software/ISA client or clean boot your server to test. In addition, set up another VPN server to test internal VPN. RegardsRick Tan TechNet Community Support

I closed the antivirus software. So far all I have tried is internal connection attempts to the VPN.
