VPC Scenario - Host Unreachable
Hi there, I'm facing a strange problem. I have two physical machines (10.1.1.10 and 10.1.1.50). On each of the two machines I'm running a Windows Server 2008 VPC Image (10.1.1.20 and 10.1.1.60). Each machine can ping each other as long as there is only one VPC Image active in the network. As soon as I start the second VPC Image or enable its NIC the ping commands fromthe hosts on one physical machine to the hosts on the second machinereturns (...) Destination host unreachable. There is no duplicate IP-Adress and no duplicate hostname and all have a subnet mask of 255.0.0.0. I reduced IP-Configuration to a minimum...no DNS Server entries, no routing into the internet, all private. I hope that someone does have a hint for me what I am doing wrong here. Thanks

When you say "VPC image", do you mean you are running Virtual PC to run the virtual machines? If so, there is a hotfix being tested inside Microsoft right now to support Windows Server 2008 as both host and guest with Virtual PC. There are some known issues with the current Virtual PC with Windows Server 2008. tgc

How did you create the two vms? Is one simply a clone of the other? This behavior happens if the machines are clones and have the same MAC address for the NIC. If this is the case, you can fix it by deleting one virtual machine and then creating a new one using the same vhd file.

Hi Bill, thanks for your reply and the info about the MAC-Adresses which were indeed the same. Changing those did the trick. Thanks and RegardsAlex
