VM charges when using Stopped (deallocated)

A question on using stopped (deallocated) for VMs.

It mentions when in this mode the VM will no longer be billed for compute charges, however are we still billed for the storage?

Eg.  have a D13 VM in stopped (deallocated), am I still billed for the storage used by the OS or temp storage?  Or are there no charges at all when in this mode?

Thank you.

Hi,

If the VM is in stopped (deallocated) mode, then you wont get billed.

It's not true!

If the VM is in Stopped (deallocated) status, you need to pay for storage where that machine is stored.

Hi a2BluSus,

When your VM is stopped (deallocated) you don't have any compute costs, but keep in mind that you will be charged for the VHD storage. You need to delete the VHD as well, in order to have no more costs.

Thanks for the replies but I' still a little confused.

If I have a VM in stopped (deallocated) will we still we charged for the storage used by the OS drive?

What about the temp storage?

Thanks

Hi,

Azure continues to charge for the VM core hours while its Stopped (but not Stopped (Deallocated)), based on the size of the VM and the image you selected to create it. You continue to accrue charges for the VMs cloud service and the storage needed for the VMs OS disk and any attached data disks. Temporary (scratch) disk storage on the VM is free.
