Update mis-detected on Server 2008 R2 SP1

I have a 2008 R2 SP1 server that does not have .NET 3.51 installed, but is detecting that it needs KB2729452 and KB2742599.

Both are security updates for the .NET Framework 3.5.1 on Windows 7 Service Pack 1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1

I cannot see why these are needed and cannot get them cleared off the server.

I am using WSUS / SCE to deploy the updates.

Any ideas?

Hi,

Checked on my computer, I don't have .Net Framework 3.5 installed but I still see some updates for .net framework 3.5 in Windows Update history. It's up to you to install it or not. We'd recommend that you install them for security consideration.

Not 3.5, but 3.51.  It is an optional feature that you install on the server.

Why has the patch been detected when the feature is NOT installed?

The updates will not install as there is nothing for them to apply to.

Marking your own incorrect reply as an answer seems a bit "dubious"

It is not .NET 3.5, but 3.51 which is a server feature you can install.

Installing patches just for the sake of it and without testing is a very bad idea on live commercail systems.  Is this what you advise?

Hi,

are you sure the updates won't install?

I'd expect (I haven't actually tried it), that Optional Features, which can be installed on demand at any time, would have updates detecting as 'required' even if the feature isn't presently installed.
Office updates work this way, because you could IoD that feature, which comes from the cache on the disk.
Patching the cache, means that if you IoD, you will get the patched component/feature and not a vulnerable one.

Definately do not install., tried several times, even after rebooting server.

The server currently hosts our ESET A/V update server and runs in VMWare.
