Unable to turn off hibernate
W2K8. Running as domain admin account. I want to disable hibernation and remove hiberfil.sys. I launch an elevated cmd prompt (start, programs, accessories, right click cmd.exe, run as administrator, cmd launches as administrator) and type powercfg.exe /h off and I get "You do not have permission to enable or disable the Hibernate feature".According to KB888575, it might be a memory problem. The server was built with 4G ram but was updated just after the build to 10G. There is now a 10g hiberfil.sys file that I don't want to leave in place.According to KB108393 there is a maxmem switch for earlier versions that might help me to clear this, but I can't find anything that tells me if it's supported on W2K8.Am I on the right track? Or is there something else I need to do to clear the hibernate feature?ThanksCharlie

You might be able to do this with Group Policy.Take a look at "Turn Off Hybrid Sleep (Plugged In)" in Administrative Templates\System\Power Management\Sleep Settings.

That didn't change much. I still can't delete the file; in use by another process. Verified through RSOP that the policy setting is applied.Any idea how to force a release of hiberfil.sys? Don't even know what process is holding it. Probably just won't delete it because it's a system file...

You could try deleting it from a WinPE command prompt. If you don't have a WinPE boot disk handy, you can get there from any Vista or Server 2008 install disk. Select "Repair my computer" and "Open a command prompt".

If I was local that might be an idea. But I'm remote.I would think there would be a way to free that up from within the OS somehow...

I'm sure there's a way. I just can't think of one.Have you rebooted since you applied the Policy?

Hi, It seems that the user is being denied privilege because you dont have Create Pagefile user rights. Please perform the following suggestions: 1. On the DC please check group policy management tool for this "Create a pagefile". 2. Normally this privilege should be enabled for Administrators group. 3. If it is already enabled for Administrators, check to see if any other policies defined might be superceding this policy. Example: 1. Start->Administrative Tools->Group Policy Management 2. Select appropriate forest->Domains->specific domain->Domain Controllers 3. Right-click Edit Default Domain Controllers Policy 4. Computer Configuration->Policies->Windows Settings->Security Settings->Local Policies->User Rights Assignment 5. Check for "Create a pagefile" privilege....should be assigned to Administrators 6. If it's already assigned to Administrators, check to see if any group policies are overriding/superceding. 7. If not assigned, right-click and add Administrators If the problem continues, please update the display adapter driver of your computer to the latest version, we found the driver vgasave.sys may cause this issue. Verified the default DC policy was set to allow administrators to create pagefiles. No change required there. Downloaded and installed the latest video driver from Dell. Rebooted server. Still same problem; "You do not have permission to enable or disable the Hibernate feature." when running powercfg.exe /h off from the elevated cmd prompt.Any other suggestions? Is there a way to track the operation to see what it's doing? I ran procmon but didn't see anything that jumped out at me as a deny or failure.

Hi Charlie, I suspec it's the memory problem described in KB888575.(The cause may be the memory change from 4GB to 10GB) I suggest that you follow Bnborg's suggestion, have a try to delete it from WinPE command prompt. You may succeed after this process.

Hi Charlie,Have you encountered the same problem with some other computer?I agree with Pravin, then problem may caused by the increasing of the memory, because I can disable the hibernate onall my Windows Server 2008computers.For your convenience, please have a test based on Bnborg's suggestion. If the issue continues, please dont hesitate to let me know.Best regards,Vincent Hu

Try starting the command shell by right clicking on the icon in the start menu and selecting "Run As Administrator". Sometimes logging on as an administrator just isn't enough, you have to "Run As" administrator as well.
