Unable to remove Application Server role on Win 2K3 because IIS could not be removed.
Hi, The server is running Win 2k3 R2 x64 and was running Exchange Server 2007 but the Exchange services are all disabled. The original problem on this server was that one .Net 3.5 SP2 update failed to install with a message "cannot find installation source" I ran the dotnet fx cleanup tool and successfully removed all versions of .Net (2.0, 3.0 & 3.5) I tried to install .Net 3.5 SP1 but the install failed with a message "cannot find .Net 2.0a I have run Add/Remove Windows Components to try to enable .Net 2.0, but the option is "greyed out" I also noticed that Application Sever role is "greyed out". I have tried to remove the Application Server role but received the message: - "Cannot Complete: The Configure Your Server Wizard cannot finish removing the application server role from this server because IIS could not be removed. To remove IIS, try running the Configure Your Server Wizard again, or use Add or Remove programs. When I opened Add or Remove programs I received aWindows Setup error "Exception calling handler routine for iis. Handler address is 0x6b490800 ......." and a further message "The installation library for component iis could not be initialized" Does anyone have any suggestions? Re-installation will be an absolute nightmare because it is the domain fileserver and needed almost 24x7 Please help, Regards, David

This sounds pretty far gone and beyond practical repair. Might want to look at building a new one and transferring the needed roles over. Regards, Dave Patrick .... Hello, .NET Framework is an important component to assure that IIS server runs properly. Base on the current situation, Id suggest you run in-place upgrade to repair the system so that afterwards you should be able to re-enable .NET Framework 2.0 in Add/Remove Windows Components, install other versions of .NET Framework (3.0, 3.5 and 4.0) and corresponding .NET patches. After that, please post in IIS forum for IIS related queries. http://forums.iis.net Thanks Zhang

Thanks for the reply, about in-place upgrade. I have planned downtime on this server during our shutdown on Friday next week so I will do the repair then. Cheers, David
