Some how lost Windows Defender while trying to unravel the conflicts with Avast. Things went down hill from there. Used recovery option to "save user files" and reinstall W7. Still don't have WD showing up. Tried to download and install W7. Get a message that WD not installed because it is included in Vista!" Dead end.
