Unable to install SCOM 2012R2 Console only on Windows Server 2012R2

Hi,

I'm trying to install the console, but no matter what I do the console won't install.

I verified all prerequisites. .net3.5 and 4.5 are installed features.
I installed the reportviewer 2012 and it's dependency.
I disabled UAC (with reboot).
Server is completely up to date with WSUS.
Running setup.exe the setup screen gets blocked (webbrowser is blocking active content). I disabled/allowed to run AC in Internet Explorer and rebooted the server. Does not help, the AC message does not go away.

I tried by installing through the setup.exe and omconsole.msi directly.
I tried run as administrator.I tried installing it on D:\ instead of C:\Program Files\

The MSI throws lots of warnings like:
Unable to access some hklm keys (they do not seem to block/abort the installation)
Error 1603 (Same).
80070005 (Same).
Some .Net40Legacyswitch error. Some article said to add the switch to machine.config but that section did not exist. When I added the section all I got was an error about it being an incorrect element.

The MSIexec log also reported the destination folder did not exist. When I created it manually, the installation went a little further by copying files to that folder, but 'the next step' still failed.

Events 11708 and 1033.

I think I've created a new Guiness record on Bing and Google search about this particular situation. So far no working solution. I'd really appreciate help solving this.

Hi Manni,

the 80070005  error code relates to insufficient permissions. Make sure you are local Administrator...I know its trivial, but it's better to mention it.

The error code 1603 can be resolved with "net helpmsg" and means "Fatal error Dring Installation". Not that helpful, right?

My advice to you is to check the Installation log Files..Normally they contain very useful Information and you can find lots of references to the errors in the different Microsoft sites and forums. The following article contains references to the relevant log files, which you can examine:

OpsMgr 2012: My installation failed. What log files do I read and where can I find them?

http://www.systemcentercentral.com/opsmgr-2012-my-installation-failed-what-log-files-do-i-read-and-where-can-i-find-them/

Concentrate on the OMConsole.log, find the last logged details and do a research on the errors. Post the related information here, I'll try to help further.

Regards,

Hi Manni,

are you also installing the web console? I see some references to IIS, which I cannot explain. Nevertheless the errors are pretty strange... I'll try to find more information nom those and get back to you.

I see NETFRAMEWORK20 ? Does that mean 2.0 needs to be installed too, but perhaps isn't by default on a win 2012 R2 server ?

I found something very interesting:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2518786

When I add the suggested solution to the machine.config file, then Powershell no longer works:

Windows PowerShell
Copyright (C) 2014 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

PS H:\> The shell cannot be started. A failure occurred during initialization:
The type initializer for 'System.Management.Automation.SessionStateScope' threw an exception.

When I remove said lines from machine.config again:

Windows PowerShell

PS H:\>

So,..... to summarize my problem and analysis till this point: I can't install omconsole.msi because i NEED to add the legacy option to machine.config. While at the same time when I add this solution Powershell stops working.

Hi Manni,

It is pretty strange... This article is written for OpsMgr 2007 and I am not sure if with 2012 R2 the topic is still open.
I tried also finding some usefull information regarding the errors, but nothing interesting came up :(
Although I must say, that the description in the KB is interesting.
What if you add this configuration only for the installation (test pursposes) and then remove it afterwards?
It's worth a try?!?

Regards

Even though I really like challenges, I don't like vague problems.

Using a 'fresh' W2012R2 installed VM I can flawlessly install the console only from the same media.
So whatever it is, something happend on the problematic server that prevents/blocks installing the SCOM console.

Additionaly to note: Another colleague tried installing SQL Management Studio 2008 and also 2012, but they won't install either.

So I'm really leaning towards .NET related issue(s). I'm just not confident/comfortable with 'resetting' .NET and it's security because something else might go into error. /sad

Maybe I'll try snapshot the server and see what caspol can do and other .NET reset tricks.
