Unable to install KB979907 MS10-041 on a Windows 2003 R2 SP2 Server
Hey Guys, I am attempting to install KB979907 MS10-041 on a Windows 2003 R2 SP2 Server getting the below error: The upgrade patch cannot be installed by the Windows Installer service because the program to be upgraded may be missing, or the upgrade patch may update a different version of the program. Verify that the program to be upgraded exists on your computer and that you have the correct upgrade patch. I attempted to install patch .net 1.1 SP1, both OCM (I've seen http://support.microsoft.com/kb/915756) and the widely available 10 MB MSI patch (NDP1.1sp1-KB867460-X86.exe). When I install the regulat 10 MB patch , I get the above error. When I install .net SP1 OCM(WindowsServer2003-KB867460-x86-ENU.EXE), it tells me my installation is much newer than SP1. I was able to verify that .net SP1 was already installed via the registry (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318785). Does any know how to install MS19-041 or KB979907 or where I can get an installable version? Thanks Tarek Hamdy, MSCE, CNE, SEC+

This should be installable version http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=6460 Be aware of language version. 1.What is the relevant message in WindowsUpdate log file? Error codes and dependent errors may be helpful. 2. Have you tried to expand update file and install it with msiexec using parameters? 3. Try stop processes that may be bound to .NET 1.1 before installing update. 4. SoftwareDistribution deletition trick may help. 5. Have you latest installer? 6. I nothing helps, then try to escalate problem to MS support

Milos, Thanks for answering. I visited the link. It is the same patch I have been using the all day on Friday. I upgraded the installer to verion 4.5 on Friday. This did not change anything. It appears the patch is for the MSI version. If we could get the OCM version, that would probably fix it. Until then, I am on the hotseat for the vulnerability. I can't be alone, This could affect millions of Windows server installations. I predecorror did not resolve it. Tarek

Milos, I will check the updatelog tomorrow morning (7/5/10) shortly after 9 AM when I arrive at the office. It could have something useful. Tarek

Hey Guys, I used the provided link http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=6460 which was different than the patch downloaded Friday morning. It resolved the issue. Thanks Tarek
