Unable to delete sql connector

I'm experimenting with the Azure portal and logic apps. To this end I created a Sql Connector, messed up the connection string and server/other settings, and want to start over. However, when I try to delete it, I get an error in the notifications section that reads:

statusCode:GatewayTimeout serviceRequestId:

statusMessage:{"error":{"code":"GatewayTimeout","message":"The gateway did not receive a response from 'Microsoft.AppService' within the specified time period."}}

...and now when I look at the Notifications section in the portal I see a task bar that says "Deleting API App...." that never ends. Is there something I can do here to unstick things?

Ok, I needed to wait 15 minutes, now the API app / SQL Connector has been deleted. Unfortunately when I now create a new instance and fill in the database properties etc, I get this when I hit the green checkmark at the bottom right:

"Error fetching the deployment template. Please try again."

This has happened a couple of times now, and I have to delete the connector and re-add it each time to try again. Am I doing something wrong?

The actual error in the notifications section is lengthy with an html doc embedded, but the (I think) main portion is this:
