Unable to create shadow copies
So I've got a bit of an issue here. Actually its two, but I'll start with the one in the title.Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2 x86I have one drive that I can't seem to create shadow copies on. The LUN size is 4.99TB with 2.63TB free. No matter what I set options to, I always get: Failed to create a shadow copy of volume F:\ Error 0x8007000e: Not enough storage is available to complete this operation I also have trouble with backups using VSS. I get "Not enough memory/Out of memory" even though the server never exhausts its physical memory (4GB).Here's the output of vssadmin list shadowstorage /on=f: vssadmin 1.1 - Volume Shadow Copy Service administrative command-line tool (C) Copyright 2001 Microsoft Corp. Shadow Copy Storage association For volume: (F:)\\?\Volume{31a249d4-1cea-469e-a435-306d1837d7e6}\ Shadow Copy Storage volume: (F:)\\?\Volume{31a249d4-1cea-469e-a435-306d1837d7 e6}\ Used Shadow Copy Storage space: 0 B Allocated Shadow Copy Storage space: 0 B Maximum Shadow Copy Storage space: 511.999 GB Any ideas? Hi, It seems a system limitation on x86 system. Please try to use the /3GB switch. Scalability Factors for Shadow Copies http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc755419(WS.10).aspx Thanks. This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights.

Hi,It seems a system limitation on x86 system. Please try to use the /3GB switch. Scalability Factors for Shadow Copieshttp://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc755419(WS.10).aspx Thanks. This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights. I'll give that a shot. Last night I moved the pagefile from C: to another drive letter because C: only had 1.5GB free. That seems to have generated different errors during backups, but I was able to manually create a shadow copy. I won't know if the scheduled ones are working until 8am today. The errors I get seem to point to what you mention.Event Type:ErrorEvent Source:VolSnapEvent Category:NoneEvent ID:5Date:10/22/2009Time:12:16:43 AMUser:N/AComputer:SERVERDescription:The shadow copy of volume F: could not be created due to insufficient non-paged memory pool for a bitmap structure. That didn't work. The /3GB switch didn't seem affect the non-paged memory at all.Guess I'm kind of stuck without shadow copies? If everyone is thinking alike, then somebody isn't thinking.

Ok so I found something else interesting. Per the MS service pack roadmap, there are no further updates planned for 2003. But when I click the link above to request a hotfix, it shows as an SP3 release.http://support.microsoft.com/hotfix/KBHotfix.aspx?kbnum=967551&kbln=en-usInteresting...If everyone is thinking alike, then somebody isn't thinking.
