Unable to Remove an IP Address
I have a 2008 server that has 2 ip addresses assigned. I need to remove one of the addresses. (IPV4)Going through the "Local area connection properties" -> "Internet Protocol Version 4" -> Advanced. I select the ip address I want to remove and click the remove button. The IP is removed. But when I go back to the Advanced TCP/IP Settings the address is still there.I have done this a hundred times without a problem. Now, on this server, I can't get rid of the unused second IP Address. The other problem that I think is related to this is that every day or two I loose the gateway address. I put it back in and everything is fine for a couple of days.Any ideas? This 2008 server is running under hyper-v, 64 bit, standard with SP2.Scott

Hello, did you install the Hyper-V integration services on the VM?http://www.virtualizationadmin.com/articles-tutorials/microsoft-hyper-v-articles/general/windows-server-2008-hyper-v-integration-services.htmlAlso i suggest to use tis forums for Hyper-V:http://social.technet.microsoft.com/forums/en-US/winserverhyperv/threads/http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/windowsserver2008r2virtualization/threadsBest regards

Hi,
Thanks for the post.
From your description, I understand that the IP address cannot be removed from TCP/IP settings.
To troubleshoot this issue, please check the following points:
1. Boot into Safe Mode to isolate the influence of additional applications. Can it be set properly?
2. Please refer to the following KB to check ghost NIC:
Error message when you try to set an IP address on a network adapter
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;269155
3. Ensure Hyper-V integration component is installed.
4. Remove and re-add a new virtual NIC for the server for test.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the response,Integration services were already installedThis is not a ghost nic problem.I removed the virtual nic, and then rebooted. On Control Panel -> Network Connections the NIC still shows up as unplugged, which implies that the underlying configuration is still there, with both IP Addresses. Same symptoms, I can remove the unwanted nic but it just keeps coming back.I then reinstalled the virtual nic and rebooted into safe mode with networkingThe same symptoms in safe mode. The nic just can't be removed. One other bit of information about this machine. It was exported from another Hyper-VM machine. With the original machine down, the new machine's name was changed, a new IP Address was assigned and Sysprep was run to change the sid, in that order. BEFORE the original machine was rebooted. The IP address I can't get rid of is the IP of the original machine. This may have something to do with this.I was able to add a third IP address, ping it from another machine and remove it, without a problem. The other interesting thing is that I can NOT ping the address that I can not remove. And I can assignthat addressto another machine without getting an IP Address conflict, and that machine works fine on the network.Other than this is an anoyance, the only real problem here is that I keep losing the gateway. Since this is a critical server in my environment, the gateway disappearing a couple times a week causes a real problem.Scott

I guess if things get too hard, everyone here just gives up.I need a suggestion on how to proceed. The plan is to totally reinstall the server with 2008 R2 when that is available, this week hopefully. This indicates that the Export/Import process under hyper-vm just plain does not work!Scott

Hi Scott,It seems to be a Hyper-V related issue, you may re-post a new thread to our Hyper-V Forum. Thank you for your understanding.http://social.technet.microsoft.com/forums/en-US/winserverhyperv/threads/

I found another article that solved the problem. How to reset Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/299357This does not explain why the Export/Import from Hvper-Vm causes so much trouble, but given the tone of the above article this is something that happens more than just once in a while, and not just in Hyper-vm.Scott
