Been trying for over a month.
No help:
Advanced guidelines for diagnosing and fixing servicing corruption
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee619779(WS.10).aspx
Would you please try to extract the update
KB969897.msu file and find out these files. For the detailed information, please refer to the following links:
http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/search.aspx?q=kb969897%202008
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928636
Checked 3 other 64 bit servers to no avail. Where else would a small company (the only ones buying SBS) look?
Those two links are useless. The first is IE 7 & 8...the problem I have is IE 6 (amd64~~6.0.1.0.mum). The second is extraction instructions...useless with no file from which to extract.
The update catalog does not list a file for this KB for Server 2008 x64 IE 6.
Thanks,
Arvis H.

I'm wondering how you got IE6 installed as Windows Server 2008 should have come with IE8 out of the box. (maybe mixing up windows version with IE version) You can download and extract new packages.

This one should be your package extraction source.

Hello:
That package contains x86 files, not AMD64 files.
It is for Windows 6, IE 8:

Dave,
Thank you for the hint...wish I had known a month ago.
MS will help with update support for no cost. That number passed me to Customer Service, who passed me to:
support 800-936-5800
m-f 6-6 pacific
The first tech worked and researched 30-45 minutes, then passed me to another division. They wanted a reboot on a production server and my remote connection to server was too slow for the new tech to use. Promised a 09:00 to 09:30 call back to
work. Now 09:37.
I will update status.
Thanks,
Arvis

Microsoft Support scheduled a call for yesterday between 09:00 and 09:30. After four phone calls and 3 e-mails, I was connected at 11:46.
I found and downloaded these while waiting on phone with MS tech support and easy assist session for 4 hours and 34 minutes.
MS is scheduled to call back today.
The search continues - down to 2 files, then will SP2 install?

MS called at beginning of his workday, got the new SUR & SUR_Persist logs.
E-mail status in afternoon...roped in other teams.
Call from MS at end of his workday stating still working. Building VM to try updates to get file.
Still no solution.

I have Server 2008 in a VM but its a clean install as I deleted the production VM after I was able to make it work OK with only 512 MB of memory as a web server.
At that time I installed it to an old machine and zapped the VM
Each time I installed Server 2008 I went to the control panel and installed all updates before I even attempted to install any roles.
More recently I upped a new server so I jumped to Server 2008 R2 on the machine. Now Server 2008 is a VM again but I have not installed any roles as I was using the VM for development study,
I have not had problems on my metal or VM so I am wondering what went wrong?
Taken from my IT site:
Please temporarily turn off the firewall/anti-virus software, then doing the following steps:
Rename the Windows Update temporary download folder %systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution to %systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution.old, you can refer to:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/958046
Reset the Windows Update Components. Refer to:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058
After the above, run a SFC scan on your computer. And reinstall these two updates to check if it works.
To use SFC simple click on start and in the seach box or run... enter sfc /scannow and wait for results.
If it doesn't work. We need to analyze the update logs. It's located in C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\cbs.txt
One last resort tool is the Windows Update Readiness Tool that is a large 300+ MB download.

This is the current SUS log file.
In earlier posts I thought the 6.0.1.0 indicated IE 6, as the download for IE 8 ended with 8.0.1.2.mum. BUT, four of the 6.0.1.0 files were in a Server 2008 x64 IE7 download. The problem is that it only had four of the six required files.
Any attempt to run KB969897 for IE 7 on Server 2008 x64 states that a newer version of the software is present (IE8 is installed)

I suspect that the updates have dependencies. I only recently switched from Server 2008 to R2 so I have been installing lots of updates mainly due to all the extras I installed.
So far nothing has failed.
What is all in your software stack on your server?

Hello,
This is a Hyper-V of SBS 2008 on a SBS Premium 2008 Hyper-V host OS. I suspect the problem occured after updates awaiting reboot with a power outage of Host, this VM and a Server 2008 VM on the same machine.

I was wondering, do you need to use the VM? Can you make do with a single server?

Might be an idea to use a couple of servers for this large of a setup.
