Two DHCP Servers Configuration with Different Scopes in One Domain
hi, currently we have two servers one is main domain controller having DHCP server, second is only domain controller. right now we are adding one more server to another company site and connect all these servers via VPN. the server which we are adding to other site we want to configure separate DHCP server so that when user of that sites could get different IP. i want to know is it possible in one domain if yes then how can we do all this with in one domain? thanks irfanIrfan Ahmed

Hi, Yes you can have multiple DHCP servers in a single domain. How to realize this largely depends on how the networks are connected...will they be different subnets or the same? Kind regards K

It all depends on your network design...and that's something for network experts. Personally i would put them in 2 separate subnets ..but then routing etc is needed...

Same subnet Create a new DHCP server in the 2nd location with the same scope of IP addresses as the original one. However Create and exclusion range on both DHCP servers which excludes the addresses distributed by the other server. For example : Scope 10.1.1.0 - 10.1.1.254 Server 1 = 10.1.1.1 - 10.1.1.128 Server 2 = 10.1.1.128-10.1.1.254 On server 1 you have to create an exclusion range for 10.1.1.128-10.1.1.254 and on server2 for 10.1.1.1128-10.1.1.129 this will avoid the same IP to be distributed 2x If one of the servers crashes, simply remove the exclusion range on the other and you are running again. Different subnet Just create a DHCP server that distributes addresses within the subnet of the office.
