Hi, I'm trying to install SP1 on 2008 R2, I get error 0x800f0818 very shortly after kicking it off. I'm also unable to get any of the server roles to show in server manager. Hello, As I see, there is a problem with two files (a .mum file and a .cat file) which should be repaired. The problem is that I am unable to locate the KB which contains them. For that, try downloading a new copy of SP1 and installing it. If this does not help, consider performing an in-place upgrade of your OS and installing SP1 after that. Already tried downloading and install SP1 via the redistributable package to no avail. When you say in place upgrade, you mean get a copy of 2008 R2 with SP1 and upgrade from that DVD?

if your OS is already 2008 R2 then you only need to downlad the SP 1 package and install it. not the while OS with SP 1. In place upgrade is that when you upgrade Server 2003 R2 x64 to Server 2008 R2 with SP 1. in that scenario you need a media kit with Server 2008 R2 with SP 1 Thamara.

No. You can perform in-place upgrade of a 2008 R2 OS. It is similar to a repair install. @Simon: Boot on the 2008 R2 install media and choose upgrade option. It is similar to that: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3413-repair-install.html This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties or guarantees , and confers no rights. Tried the in place upgrade using the original install meda. Went quite a way through, 20 minutes in and then failed. Once it restarted I'm presented with the following message: I've also tried the in place upgrade using the 'Windows 2008 R2 with SP1' media and the following compatibility message is received: I'm really is a corner with this server now. It's one of our organistaion two central DCs. It also runs DHCP for approx 120 sites. I need to add an additional role to it and keep it patched. Unable to do either currently. Thanks for the previsous suggestions, does anyone have any other ideas? Possibly a location to the missing packages? Thanks.

Hi, From the checksur.log, we found the files (list below) were corrupted, and couldn’t be repaired by the System Update Readiness Tool, so we should replace these files with the following steps. servicing\packages\Microsoft-Windows-InternetExplorer-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~9.4.8112.16421.mum servicing\packages\Microsoft-Windows-InternetExplorer-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~9.4.8112.16421.cat 1. You first need to gain control over that folder. In order to do this use the following commands in the evaluated command windows: takeown /F C:\Windows\Servicing\Packages /D y /R Then assign full control using: cacls C:\Windows\Servicing\Packages /E /T /C /G "UserName":F Note: the UserName is the User account that current logs on to the computer. This will grant you full control over the directory. 2. You can find the same files from the other Windows Server 2008 R2 + Internet Explorer 9 computer, and backup the these 14 files in the problematic computer, then copy the files to the C:\Windows\servicing\Packages folder. After these steps Server Manager can be opened successfully. And we can install service pack 1 successfully on this computer. Other information ================== In the future if you meet the similar problems, you can try the following steps to solve the issue by yourself: 1. Run the System Update Readiness tool, http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=14668 2. Check the CBS log, then if you found the similar issue in this case, you can follow the steps in this email. The System Update Readiness Tool says the missing packages are the following: Unavailable repair files: servicing\packages\Microsoft-Windows-InternetExplorer-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~9.4.8112.16421.mum servicing\packages\Microsoft-Windows-InternetExplorer-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~9.4.8112.16421.cat The article above says to download the assocaited KB. There is no KB number listed in the output. I've download IE9 and extracted but the files are not there. Anyone else got any ideas? Thanks to those who've suggested things so far.

Hi, The following thread should be helpful, please refer to it: Server 2008 SP1 Update Error code '800F0818' http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winservergen/thread/64ca4e77-8ff2-4e0f-b864-33e2f2a80126 Best Regards, Yan LiPlease remember to mark the replies as answers if they help and unmark them if they provide no help.

Thanks for this. Finding the same files on another Windows 2008 r2 + IE9 server and copying them to affected server did the trick. Was focused on trying the download the package that contained the files and didn't read the solution here which suggested looking at another server. Thanks again.

I've wasted hours trying to get SP1 installed after IE9. FYI, my other symptom was that IE9 was showing up in Windows Update even though it was installed, it would not uninstall (even using the "Fix Me" / manual approach documented in the KB - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2579295), and SP1 wouldn't install. I followed the procedure above and then copied the InternetExplorer files from a working W2008R2 w/ IE9 machine (note: there were more files on the working machine than on the source). Once I did this, I was able to re-run the SP installer and everything is now working fine. Yan --- THANK YOU
