Too many Global cataolg servers?
Quick question. I have a single forest/domain. I have 5 domain controllers all on the same subnet. I was thinking of putting the GC on 4 of the 5 DC's....all except the 1 DC that will host the PDC Emulator, RID Master and the Infrastructure Master roles. Any thoughts on this? It seems to be a bit overkill, but I know with a site/single domain, replication is not such an issue.

Hello, Actually this is not an overkill. Microsoft recommends that in a single forest/domain all domain controllers should be GC. So suggestion here is to make all 5 DC as Global Catalog as well. The Infrastructure Master Role not being a GC only applies in a single forest with multiple domain environment which is not the case in your network. HI As Isaac mentioned you should make all DCs GCs in your environment no problem with infrastructure master role if all DCs are GCs in the forest or if you single domain like your case

How many users do you have? Do you have Exchange? Also, what version of AD and EX? Since you have a single forest/single domain structure, you can make all DCs GCs. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/223346?p=1Santhosh Sivarajan | MCTS, MCSE (W2K3/W2K/NT4), MCSA (W2K3/W2K/MSG), CCNA, Network+ Houston, TX http://blogs.sivarajan.com/ http://publications.sivarajan.com/ This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights.
