my 2008R2 server DNS lof is flooded with error 5501 The DNS server encountered a bad packet from *.*.*.* Packet processing leads beyond packet length. The event data contains the DNS packet. why? thanks jc

If you look at the event log data I bet you'll find they are all addresses at akamai.net Seems these servers dont support EDNS as yet hence the errors. To stop the event log errors you can turn off EDNS0 feature as described here. Some DNS name queries are unsuccessful after you deploy a Windows Server 2003 or Windows Server 2008 R2-based DNS server http://support.microsoft.com/kb/832223 Regards, Dave Patrick .... There is a fix for this now: DNS response packet is marked as invalid after you enable the EDNS probes feature on a DNS server that is running Windows Server 2008 R2 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2739005
