Task Manager (taskmgr.exe) using very high system resources (50%+) in Server 2003 SP2
MS Windows 2003 Server Standard Edition SP2 running on an Intel Pentium 4 3 GHz with 2GB RAM; Intel D101GGC motherboard using onboard video, so portion of that RAM is used for video. Using Kaspersky AntiVirus for Servers 6.0.4.1212. System is generally lightly used; all it gets used for at the moment is as an ACT server (ACT version 6). When first setup until fairly recently, this setup was just fine and nobody noticed any problems. Lately, though, the system is running sluggishly; when Task Manager is brought up, the taskmgr.exe process is using upwards of 50% CPU time. Total CPU usage is often 100%. I can't think of a reason for taskmgr.exe to be using that much CPU time; on most other systems, it barely registers at all. Recently removed a modem from the system, and this seemed to help somewhat, but taskmgr is still using around 50% CPU time and system is easily spiked to 100% CPU. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Windows Server 2003 SP2 Kaspersky Antivirus 6.0.4.1212 Internet Explorer 8 I've made sure the drivers for the motherboard, etc., are up to date. I've got a machine with an identical config, except it's running IE7. It is not experiencing these slowdowns. Could there be an interaction with the OS/SP, the antivirus, and the IE version causing this?

Hi, To narrow down the cause, I suggest we try to disable all third party software to test, including anti-virus software. Is there any progress? If not, download Process Explorer http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx Open it, double-click Task Manager, switch to Threads tab, which thread is consuming CPU? Select that thread, click Stack, select all in the new window, click Copy, paste the result here. If possible, you may test in Safe Mode and Clean Boot and let us know the result. Thanks.
