Targeting rules/monitors on custom attributes

I have a log that I need to monitor, I created a custom attribute based on a regkey to find the application that generates this log. Then created a new rule and used the windows_extended (I renamed it but is the default name) as the target and left the rule as enabled.

When viewing discovered inventory and change the target type to the windows_extended I created I see all hosts listed and the last column is my custom attribute with a true or false value.  The ones listed as true are the ones I want this rule to run on.

Will my rule only run on the ones that show as true?  Or will it run on all machines that show up, true or false?

I recommend that you create a group which contains an instance whose windows_extended attribute is ture and then create a new rule with target with this group

when creating the rule, target windows OS,  but have the rule disabled. To enable the rule use an override using the group roger mentioned above.

hope this helps!

I don't think you can use a group as a target.

I found the easy way is to choose a broad class like windows OS, leave it disabled and then create the override to enable it for a group based on the extended attribute.

Targeting the extended attribute created earlier does end up targeting all nodes based on base class.  doesn't matter if that attribute is true or false.

I think the better way is to create a custom class but that doesn't appear to be available in the SCOM UI.  Need to do something in VSAE or another tool like MPAuthor.
