TCP problem
Hi, it seems that there is a problem with TCP/IP settings in my Windows server 2003 R2 Enterprise x64 edition machine with 16 Gb of RAM, which I can not resolve. The problem happens when I try to copy large number of small files over network connection (40 000 small images). After some time copying, the machine can not establish any kind of TCP connection anymore. On the machine I am hosting Tomcat server fronted with apache web server, and apache can not connect to tomcat. When I restart windows, everything works fine. I have default installation and didn't do any TCP tweeking. Does anyone know how to properly set up TCP parameters to resolve this issue?

Have you tried resetting your tcp/ip stack? You can do that this way:Follow these steps to use the reset command to reset TCP/IP manually:To open a command prompt, click Start and then click Run. Copy and paste (or type) the following command in the Open box and then press ENTER:cmdAt the command prompt, copy and paste (or type) the following command and then press ENTER:netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txtNote If you do not want to specify a directory path for the log file, use the following command:netsh int ip reset resetlog.txtReboot the computer.Note: After you haveexecuted all this, you need to reconfigure your ip settingsSource: How to reset Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Certifications: MCSA 2003 Studying for MCSE 2003

Hi,Try to take a network trace when you are performing the transfer. Do you have any System events logged? If you take a performance monitor log what do you see on the network que length?

And how are you progressing with this problem, can we help you with anything? Certifications: MCSA 2003 Studying for MCSE 2003 I really don't know how to trace this anymore. Now it is happening after few days the machine is up. Don't even need to copy anything over the LAN. What happens is that first apache looses connection with tomcat instance. Also, tomcat looses connection to database which is on different machine. In the event viewer there are few errors reported that does not make any sense. It reports that tomcat is down or some of my other java processes, but they were never down. If I restart apache, everything works for the next 2-3 minutes and than loses connection again. The only solution is to restart the whole machine. I have a listing of TCP connections that were opened at the time this happened, and it seems there are not many connections (160 listed with netstat -ano). Could someone tell me step by step instructions how could I trace the problem? I am windows server newby and don't know much about administering it.

Have you checked to see if the network card(s) power management settings? Could be turning off power to save resources?

1) Be sure that the maschine is up todate2)Check the offloading status on the OS check the offloading status on the network card. For testing only be sure that both are off3)Please answer on the following questions:Do you have any System events logged? If you take a performance monitor log what do you see on the network que length? After applying points 1-3 we can do an simulatenous network traceBTW reseting tcp/ip usually does not help in this cases.

Now I am back at figuring out what could be the problem here. 1) machine is up to date (service pack 2 with all the latest updates) 2) Offloading status on the OS is disabled (TCPChimney parameter in registry is set to 0) and offloading status on network card is on. I turned it off now to see if it will make some difference. 3) There were no meaningfull errors in System Events log. The ony warning that I found was: The server could not bind to the transport \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{3E124672-DAFF-4233-B87C-5E57B060214C}. There are some errors that does not make any sense, like I said before, saying that that tomcat is terminated unexpectedly or some of my other java processes, but they were never down. How can I take performance monitor log? When I start perfmon, which counters do I need to add for my network card?
