TCP/IP Settings
OS: Windows 2003 Setup: LAN IP Address: 192.168.0.1 Subnet: 255.255.0.0 We are teaching trainers and technicians on how to configure these systems as standalones LAN. The argument I am making is the subnet mask of 255.255.0.0 for IP Address 192.168.0.1 is incorrect. In my opinion it should be 255.255.255.0 per TCP/IP. Can someone else advice what would be the correct subnet for 192.168.0.1? Thanks

the correct subnet mask would be 255.255.255.0 for 192.168.0.1 subnet because its a class C address and 2 octates are reserverd for the network subnet and 1 for the host subnet. http://www.virmansec.com/blogs/skhairuddin

Hi, Thanks for the post. 192.168.0.0/16 (192.168.0.0, 255.255.0.0) Allows the following range of valid IPv4 unicast addresses: 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.255.254. The 192.168.0.0/16 address prefix has 16 host bits that you can use for any addressing scheme within a private organization. For more information, please take the time to check RFC1918.
