Systemstate Restore

Hi,

I was restoring a deleted object from windows 2008 R2 DC.

I have took the system state backup to remote share and was trying to restore deleted OU from the backup which is shared in remote path using windows server backup.Backup says successfully recoverd, but I can,t see the deleted object back in AD.

But I have used the same system state backup and tried restoring via ntdsutil and found object recoverd successfully.

Can anyone tell me why it is not properly getting restored when using windows server backup ?

Hi,

In first restore attempt, was it giving any errors ? do you see any thing on event viewer ?

You can enable AD recycle bin feature as described in one of my articles which allow you to recover objects.

Actually i our prod environment, current functional level is 2008.

And I am performing this test in stage server as part of Disaster recovery check.

When we ran system state restore, I didn't find any error too.

Hello,

which option have you used to restore?

For object restore https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc755296(v=ws.10).aspx

Full DC recovery https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc772519(v=ws.10).aspx

You will have to provide the detailed steps on how you did this, otherwise there is no way for us to tell what is missing in your procedure.

Or you can have a check against these articles by yourself and see if any steps are missed:

Hope this helps.

Hello,

"Actually i our prod environment, current functional level is 2008."

You need at least Windows Server 2008 R2 functional level.

Hi,

Can you please let us know the detailed steps you followed in 1sr and 2nd time.

I think, 1st time you have not done non-authoritative restore and in 2nd time you have selected authoritative restore. In authoritative restore you need to raise the Version number (msDS-KeyVersionNumber)of a deleted object.

Find the below link for reference:

Authototative Restore:https://technet.microsoft.com/fr-fr/library/cc816878(v=ws.10).aspx

I was trying to restore OU from AD recycle bin by enabling the feature.

As mentioned by Meinolf, you need at least Windows Server 2008 R2 functional level to use AD recycle bib.

For the question mentioned in your original question, you need to check the articles shared by others above for the correct steps.
