Sysprep and imagex on different computer
Hello everyone, I am making a sysprepped image - windows server 2008 R2 with installed drivers and software that i want to deploy later on - on R310 machines The steps are installing OS with all drivers and software, then sysprep, and then booting from bootable usb with windowsPE and using imagex to capture the HD. I would like to know if the image i captured on the R310 can be deployed on the R510.. that way it can save me the touble if making 2 different images for each machine.. Thanks in advance, ilan.

Yes it might work but after booting the server there will be some issues related to drivers and if the server is going to be for the production then I would ask you to create another Image for R510.http://www.virmansec.com/blogs/skhairuddin

OK So the only thing I need to do is update drivers ? I understand that if the motherboards are different, then i should make 2 images right ? doing it with 1 image is only good if *all* the hardware is the same, and if there is a bit difference it will damage the proccess ? Another thing, if i want to make a bootable usb with imagex tool on it and the .wim i want to /apply. how can i automatically format my new HD? instead of loading with winpe and then searching for the hard drive/partition (with diskpart) and then format it, can i make a script that detects the new hardware lets say it will detect it by the hardware size, and format it. if i attach a new unformatted WD 120 giga, and i put the usb bootable with winpe+imagex+capturedimage, i want it to detect the HD (it will put the 120 gb as c) format the hd, assign c: to it, and deploy the image after the formation using the imagex /apply.. is it possible ?

Hi, If you intend to transfer a Windows image to a different computer, you must run the sysprep command with the /generalize option, even if the computer has the same hardware configuration. The sysprep /generalize command removes unique information from your Windows installation, which enables you to reuse that image on different computers. Meanwhile, if you plan to use the imagex /apply command to apply a Windows image to a computer, the partition layout on the reference and destination computers should be identical. For example, if you capture a customized Windows image on drive D, you must always deploy that image onto drive D of the destination computer. As a work around, please create an unattended file to format the hard disk, partition it, add device drivers path , and then automate Windows Setup.
