Switching From NT4 PDC to 2003 DC
Need some suggestions and further info, if possible on a current changeover issue we've got at work. Right now, we've got one NT-4 box on a staff network which is currently acting only as a DC. Everything else has been moved off of there to the 2003 servers. Can we simply promote one of our 2003 servers to a DC, acting as a backup for the NT-4 box, then eventually demote and shut down the NT-4 box? We've done with when installing new hardware at one of our remote sites, but all of the servers were Windows 2003, making things less complicated. Any suggestions for further info in this are also appreciated.

Hello,if i understand you correct you have a domain running with one NT4 domain controller? Then you are not able to add a 2003 domain controller.NT4 domains are different from Active directory domains. Please correct me if i am wrong ro describe more detailed your setup with domain controllers in the domain.Best regards

While much of the terminology is the same, NT 4 Domains and Active Directory are very different things. NT 4 maintains a centralized object and security database, while Active Directory is a distributed, hierarchical, directory service. You will need to perform a migration to Windows 2003. It's not that bad though, in large part due to the well-proven migration utilties that MS has made available. With a little planning, an A/D migration can be done with minimal pain and downtime.I'd recommend starting here: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/evaluation/whyupgrade/nt4/nt4domtoad.mspxwww.operatingquadrant.com
