Suspect thumbnailer.exe causing my server to hang
I am having a problem with a server that I support for one of my clients. The server is running windows 2003 with service pack 2. For the last couple of months the server seems to hang and lockup usually on the weekends. The first sign of problems is an error 2019 in the system event log that states "The server was unable to allocate from the system nonpaged pool because the pool was empty". After that other errors of services stopping start to get logged as well. The only file that I can see that is using an exessive amount of nonpaged memory is a file named thumbnailer.exe. This file uses between 75,000k and maybe 100,000k when I monitor it in the Task Manager. I am not sure this is the problem, but it sure seems like it is. Does anyone know what this file is? I have tried to Google it but the only thing that I find is it is a app used for creating thumbnails out of image files. I have never seen this file running on any other server. Maybe it's some type of malware or something? Thanks in advance for the help.

I'd check msconfig startup tab to see if you can determine where it starts from and try disabling it as a test. AFAIK it is not part of the operating system. Regards, Dave Patrick .... Sorry for the late reply on this. I have just been kind of busy. So I looked at all the startup items and I do not see anything that starts thumbnailer.exe. The problem seemd to have started shortly after installing Carbonite. Not sure if that has anything to do with it, but I am about to uninstall Carbonite and see what happens. I just searched the registry and found that is is an app from a Ditto NAS drive that was once connected to the server. I disabled it and we'll see what happens now.
