Suitable windows server version?
I have certain requirements that needs to be fulfilled for the Windoes server edition we need and I hope you guys can help me out: 1. Server needs to run IIS7 and SQL Server 2008. 2. Clients will access server over WCF services and the services communicate with SQL server. The clients will be connected with HTTP and TCP but as I said, will only access server over WCF. 3. The server must be able to access another Windows server that is located online somewhere. 4. It must be possible to mirror at least the database in SQL server to another identical physical windows server (I don't even know if that has anything to do with the Windows server version). 5. Preferrably the server should support at least 1 remote desktop connection. 6. The server will need to support at least 150 different clients but in the future it might be as many as 2000. As mentioned above, only accessing over WCF services. So, based on the above requirements, what windows server version can you recommend? Is Windows Web Server 2008 R2 an option? Thanks for help!

I usually install on at least Windows Server 2008 Standard, however Windows Server 2008 R2 Web meats the minimum requirenments http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143506.aspx#SEx64With kind regards Krystian Zieja http://www.projectnenvision.com Follow me on twitter My Blog

Thanks for your reply. Do you mean that Web Server 2008 R2 meets the requirements I have? My main concern is how the clients that are connected through WCF services are treated. Are they treated as clients so that for each connected client we would need a CAL even though the clients only connect through WCF?

When it comes to CALs you will need a CAL for any connection to the server but the peope to speak with about CALs is MS themselves since they are the licenser of the software. We can't 100% answers since we don't speak for MS Licensing. Please contact an authorized dealer or MS Volume licensing for questions on CALs. I would suggest using Standard edition but Web edition is supported for your current configuration.
