Streaming Media Services Role Missing
Hi there, trying to install Streaming Services aka Windows Media Sevices 2008 on my server 2008 enterprise SP2. The role is not appearing in the add roles wizard. I have gone through the process of installing it using this guide 'http://support.microsoft.com/kb/934518'. However, all the update files it links me to simply say "this update does not apply to your system". Any ideas?

Do you really need Windows Media Services, or do you just need Windows Media Player? If you just need the player then install the Desktop Experience feature using Server Manager. Tony

Yes, I used it on my old server to stream videos for my website, I have installed the desktop experience as well.

In that case, have you double-checked that you have the correct download version for your server (x64 vs x86 and server vs core)? http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=9CCF6312-723B-4577-BE58-7CAAB2E1C5B7&displaylang=en Tony

Yup, running 32bit version and downloaded all the x86 ones. All had the same error message "this update does not apply to your system".

Strange. Please can you check the value under: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\BuildLabEx. It should be: 6002.18005.x86fre.lh_sp2rtm.090410-1830 Tony

Slightly different 6002.18005.x86chk.lh_sp2rtm.090410-1830

That might be the problem then. The chk refers to the build being a "checked" version, as described here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms792442.aspx Tony

I take it I'm looking at a reinstall then? XD

Yes, it looks that way. I guess you used the media from a MSDN download? It's easy to get the wrong one.Tony

I downloaded it from Technet, is there an easy way to tell the difference?

Yes, usually the checked version states "checked". It was a long time before I knew what "checked" actually meant. It's confusing.Tony
