Standby of the Windows Server 2008 r2
Hello. I've never done this on Server 2K8 but there is an option that may work. If the server's bios supports Wake On Lan, you can enable that option and set the sleep options in the OS to sleep at the desired time (I think the ACPI mode has
to be set to S3 but am not sure on that). With WOL, the computer will sleep until it gets a packet that is addressed to it and then it will come out of sleep mode and eventually allow the connection.
I don't have any more specifics, but it might be a point of research for you. BTW unless you have some kind of server management software that lets you modify the bios on the system while the OS is running, you will have to be at the physical keyboard
and press the correct key during BIOS POST.
Hope this helps! Good Luck!

Hi,
If the Power Options are grey most likely they are managed by Group policy. Make sure you don't have any group policy applied on those servers that prevent modifications to the power scheme. Either run gpresult at a cmd prompt and identify the policy settings
in GPManagement on a Domain Controller or run mmc and choose Resulting Set Of Policies and look at the Computer configuration\AdministrativeTemplates\System\PowerManagement.MCTS...

We have a computation rack server (PY RX600S5 X7550) running Windows Server 2008 r2. We access the server by remote desktop.
Sometimes it happens that the temperature raises in the room where it is located and our IT guy turns off all the servers. This is not good after several weeks of running computations. My question is simple.
How to enable standby mode so that the IT guy will let the server sleep and the running computations would not fail? Is it possible to enable it from the remote desktop? I am not familiar with that and I am afraid that nor is our IT guy...
PS: I guess that with 32GB of memory, the hibernation is not reasonable, right (too slow...)?

Hi,
thank you for your response.
I have actually already tried the first link but it did not work for me - probably because I tried that from the remote desktop. The IT guy also tried the first link both in Console and Remote desktop, without success.
I cannot change the settings Power Options/Sleep/Allow wake timers/Setting/(grey - Enable) because it is grey. I will resend the third link to our IT guy with the hope that he will be able to do something about it.
Thanks again,
Oldrich Svec
