Stacked Switch monitoring - scom

Hi All,

Can someone advise how we may monitor a stacked switch in on our network via scom 2012 please?

We have 2 switches in a stack (sw1 & sw2), with one device connected to sw2. If we disconnect sw2 from the stack, we only see alerts for the device that is connected to it, we do not see any alerts for the sw2 itself, im assuming this is because the IP is still reachable via snmp and icmp.

How would we monitor the switches within the stacks and have an alert appear for that switch if it were to fail or go offline?

Hi,

Whether both of the switches in the stack got discovered, in my point of view, if you can monitor each switch, then we should get alerts when the switch go offline.

Hi Yan,

Thanks for the reply, seems  that we are discovering some of the stacked switches and not others, what we see are multiple instances of the switch appearing in network devices, but with different mac addresses listed in the details view, this only seems to happen with some of our stacked switches at sites, and yes as you said, we do get alerts for the individual switches in the stack in those cases.

It was my understanding that using snmp monitoring on a stacked switch would allow us to monitor switches within the stacks...?
