Sometimes unable to access a shared folder in Win Server 2003 from 2008R2 using netbios name
Hi, We have a remote desktop server (Windows Server 2008R2) which is running application that requires to have a network drive mapped to a shared folder in a Windows Server 2003 machine. Occasionally, the network drive is not accessible. When we tried to connect to the shared folder using the netbios name, it didn't work. It worked when we used the fqdn name. Strangely, this happen only once in awhile. We usually can fix it by disconnecting the network drive and re-map it using the fqdn name of the win server 2003 machine. Anyone know why this happened and how to fix this issue for good?

If you can't trace the problem back to the DNS server A record OR the DNS domain suffix on the TS server, an acceptable workaround is just to enter the NETBIOS name into the TS server's hosts file: C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts At least that way the TS server will always be able to resolve the remote server NETBIOS name. If you end up going down this path, don't forget about it if you ever change the IP address of the remote server ;-)
