Some more Qs domain upgrade from 2003 to 2008
Hi Everyone, It turned out more and more questions I have for the domain upgrade... Hope you can help. I am going to add a 2008 R2 on a new site (without any DC) to our current 2003 AD. Our Forest contain only one domain. Do I still need to do adprep /domainprep and/or adprep /domainprep /gpprep. Are they both the same? Also, on a DC with all FSMO roles, it also have some other zones for internal naming resolution purpose (but not windows domain). They are all primary and "not allowed Dynamic updates". Would the AD upgrade affect these zones? Do I need to do the adprep for these non-windows zones -- I guess not right? Finally, my Exchange server is 2007 SP1 and running on a non-DC server. Do I need to do any updates on the 2007? For some reasons we may not want to update so SP2 yet.... Hope you can help. I always worried too much :) Thank you again for your help. Takami Chiro

Hello, if you don't install a new domain tree or child domain, yes adprep /domainprep /gpprep has to be done. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd464018(WS.10).aspx DNS zones have nothing to do with adprep and shouldn't be effected. See here about Exchange and AD: http://msmvps.com/blogs/mweber/archive/2010/05/23/exchange-server-and-it-s-relationship-to-active-directory.aspx Keep in mind the SPs have a major reason and should be used. Until now SP3 is also released. Keep in ind that with all changes like new OS versions you should make sure to have an up to date backup, in case something fails.Best regards Meinolf Weber Disclaimer: This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties or guarantees , and confers no rights.

Hi Meinolf, Thank you very much to have to post the answer about the Exchange again. I know the article say it clear..but would like to double confirm... To have Exchagne 2007 running in 2008 Domain, SP2 at least is required on Exchange 2007? Thank you! Takami
