Software Licensing Service
Hi
My domain contains three dc's and every dc has the software licencing service installed and running.
Now there are several other member servers, where the software licensing service is installed as well. None of those servers have a corresponding srv record set, but only some of them are reporting the following error in the event log:
Event ID: 12293
Source: Security-Licensing-SLC
Description: Publishing the Key Management Service (KMS) to DNS in the 'domain.com' domain failed. Info hr=0x8007232D
Can I remove the software licensing service e.g. on an exchange 2007 server, or do I have to register the corresponding srv record manually in DNS for this server?
Regards
Peter

Hi,
According to the description, you would like to register the corresponding srv record, I suggest you ask in exchange forum.

Hi,
this event suggests that your servers are operating as KMShost servers.
This implies you are using the KMShost product key in all of these servers, which is a configuration error on your part.
You do not need many KMShost servers. There is a limit to the number of KMShosts that a KMShost product key can be used on.
You may soon find that you cannot commission any more servers with this product key, due to over-use of it.
e.g. a corporation the size of Microsoft only has 4 KMshost servers. It seems you have 5. It's unlikely you would need more than MS?Don

Hi Don
Thanks for your answer.
I guess you are right, but can I just remove the KMS service from that server?

well, the KMS is just a particular mode which the SLSsvc/SPPsvc operates in, depending on the productkey installed.
so if you change the installed productkey on the exchange server to be a KMSclient productkey then activate it to your KMS it would be fine.
if needed, you then just have to delete the DNS records for the exchange server in the _vlmcs._tcp zonefile, so KMSclients dont find it.Don

The problem is, there is no such DNS record. That's why I got these warning events in the eventlog. I would like to get rid of these warnings.
So I could manually create the DNS record, but I don't like that, because I already have two KMS Servers correctly registered.
Or I remove the KMS installation from the exchange server. The question is, can I just remove it?
This KMS has no received requests.

ok, so yep, if you don't want/need this operating as a KMS and no clients are activating through it, then remove the incorrect product key that is present (which is why it is operating as a KMS), and install the correct product key.
this is all it takes to "demote" a KMShost.
You can install either KMSclient pkey or MAK pkey.
KMSclient pkeys are generic, and are here:

Hello,
No you should not remove the service, that service is used by activation and SLAPI as well as for KMS. Removing or disabling the service could make the machine appear to be in a tampered state.
Open an elevated cmd prompt, run slmgr /dlv and report back the output from the Description line.
Let's make sure these machines did not have a KMS host key installed by accident, we see that commonly happen. Thanks, Darrell Gorter [MSFT] This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights. yep, so this confirms that you have an installed KMShost product key on this server.
you can change the installed product key n thi server to be either KMSclient or MAK, then activate the newly installed product key. this will change this server so it is no longer acting as KMShost.Don
