Slow printing / printer properties

I have two VMs both Server 2012R2. One of them shares printers with no problem.

The other shares printers - however on the clients printing is slow and the printer properties takes 60secs or more to appear.

Both are on different hosts and are unstressed. The good one is a gen1 VM and is our file server, the other gen2 and just runs WSUS at the moment. I am setting up the same printers using the same drivers.

I'm struggling to see what the difference is between them - any advice would be much appreciated.

Hi,

Thanks for the post, would you please check if the SNMP enabled on the printer? You can verify it via below steps:

Right-click the printer, and then click Properties>>Click the Ports tab>>Click Configure Port>>Click to clear the SNMP Status Enabled check box>>click OK, and then click Close.

Besides, if your printers are HP printers and use the HP universal printer driver, you might have a check on the below article to see if it's helpful:

Elaine,

Thanks for the reply.

Cleared the SNMP box as suggested - no change.

I am using the HP universal print driver on one of the printers and I did think that was the issue. But - it works fine on the other server. Also I get the same symptoms with other printers / drivers. The article is also out of date as the current UPD is v5.9.0

Finally - printing from the server itself is fine. It's only clients that have the problem.

Thanks,

James.

Well this is embarrassing ... I set up another vm on the host to see what happened. It had the same problem. This pointed to the host. I then updated the network drivers on the host ... now the print properties open in 1-2secs rather than 60!
