Single Processor in Task Manager (NUMPROC-1)
Dear All, It has been observed that my DB server has 24 processors installed which i can see in Device Manager. But in Task Manager i can only see single Processor. During investigation it has been observed that in BOOT.INI /NUMPROC-1 switch is enabled. My query is if i remove this switch what will happened ? Will this effect any thing on my PRODUCTION SERVER? Hi Malik, This switch sets the number of processors that Windows will run at startup. With this switch, you can force a multiprocessor system to use only the quantity of processors (number) that you specify. This switch can help you troubleshoot performance problems and defective CPUs. Available switch options for the Windows XP and the Windows Server 2003 Boot.ini files http://support.microsoft.com/kb/833721 Limiting the Number of Cores of Execution on a Windows System http://software.intel.com/en-us/articles/limiting-the-number-of-cores-of-execution-on-a-windows-system/Regards, Rafic If you found this post helpful, please give it a "Helpful" vote. According to the article below from intel it states that If you have a Windows test machine with a large number of CPU cores that you wish to use for testing performance and compatibility with a lesser number of CPU cores you may be able to use that one machine to test several multicore scenarios. For example, an 8-core machine can be configured to restrict Windows from using all 8-cores, forcing it to use, for example, only 4, 2, or even one core in the machine. This technique can be used to more evenly compare system performance by varying the number of cores on the machine and to verify proper operation or scalability of your software for a variety of multicore configurations. http://software.intel.com/en-us/articles/limiting-the-number-of-cores-of-execution-on-a-windows-system/ This is only meant for checking the performance with application so I believe there should be no impact but doing anything before doing that please take the backuphttp://www.arabitpro.com
