Simple way to migrate 10 users and computers from 2003 SBE to Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials?

Hi,

What I'd like to do is start from scratch but only keep users and computers, so I don't have to re-setup each user and each computer after the new server is in place.

It's the first time I'm going to do this. Basically, what would be the steps to transfer users and computers from Windows 2003 SBE to Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials?

Thanks Burak,

At step 2 of this tutorial : "Migrate from Previous Versions to Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials or Windows Server Essentials Experience" : They mention to "To install Windows Server Essentials as a replica Windows Server 2012 R2 domain controller in an existing domain". Is this optional or is it mandatory. I mean, if I want the migration to work, do I need to set the destination server as a replica?

Hi

Essentials server have to be Domain Controller, when you add Essentials to existing domain as an additional domain controller, after then you have to transfer fsmo roles in 21 days.

You mean I can skip that step, since Windows 2012 R2 Essentials is already a DC? So I don't have to set it as a "replica"? Just by joining Essentials 2012 to the domain, that step will be taken care of?

Hi

When you add Essentials on existing domain(step 2 in article),essentials be a DC right, after than you have to transfer 5 fsmo roles from 2003 sbs to 2012 r2 Essentials in 21 days.

You could apply this steps.(explaining on the step 2 simply, add Essentials on domain as an Additional DOmain ontroller, then transfer fsmo roles.)

OK thanks.

On the page "Install a Replica Windows Server 2012 Domain Controller in an Existing Domain (Level 200)"  they say : "Run adprep.exe /gpprep manually for all domains that were not previously prepared for Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008, or Windows Server 2008 R2. " Does it mean I need to run adprep.exe /gpprep on my source windows 2003 before adding 2012 to the domain?

If your domain does not meet the minimal functional levels, you could manually prepare,Also check your functional level.

So your server 2003 sbs and functional level 2003(i guess)??On the AD DS Configuration wizard when "add a domain controller to an existing domain" section,it will prepare domain level automaticly.
