Shutdown VM to save money.....?

I read that if one shuts down an Azure VM (from inside the VM) that billing stops for  that VM. I also saw a video on YouTube indicating that would not stop billing because the powered down VM was still Azure  resources. He mentioned that to save money one needed to "detach" (?) the VM. Can someone please clarify this for me?

TIA,

There are two options to shut down VM. You can shut it down from VM with remote connection or you can shut it down from portal.

If you shut it down from VM remote connection, resources will not be delocated and you will be charged for VM.

If you shut it down from portal, resouces will be delocated and you will NOT be charged.

You wil still be charged for VM disk on blob but you only pay for real data not full size of disk. Let's say you have 1TB disk on your VM, but only 100GB of data on it. You pay for 100GB, not full size of disk. But price of storage is pretty cheap so you don't have to warry about it too much, 100GB cost around $5 a month.

Hi,

To complete th answer, for saving money, you need to stop the VM by the portal.

You can do a little script in Azure Automation to stop VM when you want.

I will look for that option.....
