Should we set up DHCP Server on the Domain Controller ?
Hi, We are migrating from Active Directory from another NOS lately. We have been using a Windows Server for running DHCP Server with the previous NOS. Since that Windows Server is going to retire, we would like to seek your advice whether we can install DHCP on the Domain Controller ? This is because from a number of posts, it seems that it is not recommended due to secrutiy reasons. Thanks

Hi, Microsoft recommends that it's better to put each server role on a member server in the domain. But, you can run DHCP server in the domain controller.Best Regards Don't forget to mark it as answer if it helps

Hello, you can but as you said not recommended because of security. If you do it follow at least this way to make it more secure: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/816592 Otherwise you will see event id 1056 listed in the event viewer.Best regards Meinolf Weber Disclaimer: This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties or guarantees , and confers no rights.

Hello, basically a DC should only run AD/DNS/GC and that's it. Also it is recommended to have at least 2 DC/DNS/GC per domain for failover and redundancy. Additional all domain members must be configured to use both of them on the NIC DNS settings. All other services, applications should run on member servers.Best regards Meinolf Weber Disclaimer: This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties or guarantees , and confers no rights.
